Core spices and flavorings -
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 cup chopped onions
1/2 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp chopped garlic or garlic paste
1/3 cup chopped tomatoes
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp red cayenne pepper
1 tbsp chopped cilantro for garnishing
Secondary spices and flavoring-
3-4 curry leaves
1/3 cup each three types of lentils (mung,masoor and channa)
4 cups water
salt to taste
1 tbsp vegetable oil
Boil the lentils in water to which salt and turmeric have been added.
When the lentils are almost soft heat oil in a separate pan and add onions and garlic to it.
Add cumin powder, curry leaves, cayenne pepper and chopped tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes are tender.
Now pour this mixture into the lentils and let the lentils cook until they are fully cooked and soft to the point that they can be mashed between your fingers.
Sprinkle the garam masala and stir.
Garnish with cilantro and serve with boiled rice or enjoy as a soup.
